An eye-opening experience

My eyes have been opened to see a glimpse of God's heart through this mission trip. I have a tendency to shrink my view of God down to the size of whatever is troubling me. However, God has used this trip to remind me of who he is - a dad with a broken heart who desperately wants all of his children to know him personally.

The kids of the 25th of May in Skopje, Macedonia are a beautiful example of why Jesus pointed to children and stated that the kingdom of heaven belonged to such as these. The language barrier between our team and the kids didn't matter. The difference in age and wealth didn't matter. The one thing that did matter was they opened their hearts to receive the love we gave them in Christ's name. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to know them and love them and watch their hearts expand.

I have an exciting update on Dennis, the young man I mentioned in a previous post. Our missionary friends in Macedonia provided him with a Bible just as we promised him. I remember the look on his face as he showed it to me. He was awed that someone had made a promise to provide him with something and actually followed through on it. The next day he came up to me again with a wide grin on his face and said he'd read the first seven chapters of Matthew. Praise God for an answered prayer and may he bless all of you who continue to pray without ceasing.

Home Again, Home Again

Traveled home yesterday beginning at 3:30 am and arriving home about 10:00 pm; long day, but an exhaustion borne up by wonderful feelings of gratitude and love.  Love and gratitude first of all to Christ; He always does above and beyond what we can imagine or even think, and that truly was the case from the beginning of our gathering during January 2012 in preparation, to the final day, May 15th, that we spent with the orphans.  But beyond that, love and gratitude to the team that took on this mission.  This team demonstrated the love of God, in Christ Jesus, to orphans who have been cast aside by life, and to refugee women, that relished the opportunity to serve coffee and have woman to woman conversations, and to see their children loved by a group of American missionaries.  I stated in an earlier post, that the Administrator of the facility, Stefcha, said that you could see the love that we had for the children from an airplane, and that was true.

Our prayers in the beginning were that we would have favor with the children, with the administration, and within the team framework, and that the work would go well.  Thank you God that you hear our prayers and you allow us to cooperate with you in touching tender hearts; tender hearts beyond belief.  The children and the team wept as we departed from the facility; it seemed as though every one was crying.  Tears of joy to be sure, but tears of already missing each other.  There were so many appeals for the team to return as soon as possible.  And God has stirred the tender hearts of the team to again take up the mantle of touching hearts and changing lives.  I suspect that many on this team will return to Macedonia in the coming years and that lives will be changed because of that commitment.

Thank you again to our supporters; you have an integral part of all that was accomplished for the children.  Without you, none of this would have been possible.  Your financial support and your prayer support carried the day.  The team got most of the benefit, but I certainly believe that there are treasures in heaven stored up for those that supported this team and this mission project.  This team thanks all of you, and we love you with a powerful love that comes straight from the heart of God.  He loves, so we love, and so you have loved us and made this possible.  God bless each of you.

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven...... for where you treasure is, there your heart will be also.  (Matthew 6: 19 - 21).

Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.  (James 1:27)

This was the last night to be with all the orphans and Macedonian family of brothers and sisters for this mission in Christ. The love we feel FROM the kids and everyone in Macedonia is virtually overwhelming. There isn't anything better than "being with" others in the name of Christ. Our hearts have been filled to the max. We are sad to return back to the USA but we know we are returning to Macedonia very soon and the kids and everyone here in MK also know this. We are filled with their words of love and hugs and also their tears of sadness of our leaving for a time. The work we accomplished together as a team once again was a scene of victory, and it was only accomplished because of unity in Christ. We are no longer "missionaries" - we are family, and they are family. We can't thank our supporters enough because you are all a part of this time. The country of USA and Macedonia do not have boundaries. God is great, He is awesome, and He did this...He placed us ALL together as one, just as He is One in us. How powerful, how majestic, and nothing can come between that. Jas sum strekna, jas sum prekrasna, jas sum blagoslovena. (I am happy, I am wonderful, and I am blessed.) ---elizabetce

On the Mountain top...

We had the opportunity to go up to the mountain where the Millennium Cross stands above Skopje.
Matt & Sarah and their daughter came along. They are missionaries here full-time. Also, our friends Marina & Mickey, Elena, Martin and our loyal driver and friend, Lupja.
We head off later to the Orphanage for a picnic. The zip line will get a full workout and we'll just have time to spend with the kids and administrators.
Should be an excellent day!

God Hears Our Prayers

What an amazing day again today.  We finished the installation of the ZipLine and platform; the kids love it.  There is a line that forms any time that the ZipLine ride is open; no height restrictions.  We have one little rider, Buh ran (sp.), who is the smallest of four brothers here; he is about two feet tall (well maybe a little taller).  He zips down with no fear in his heart, but with a smile on his face.  We also finished getting a first coat of paint on the playground equipment.  The staff is talking about putting up some type of plaque, and maybe planting two trees in honor of the work that has been accomplished this week.  According to anecdotal information, it is quite a significant statement of appreciation by the staff of the facility.  What an awesome God we serve.

Besides all that, God has allowed us to participate in so many memorable activities over the three days that we have served at the orphanage.  Every day that we arrive, there is a welcoming committee of eager faces to greet us and to give us hugs and kisses.  Without getting specific, God has definitely knitted some hearts together between the team and the orphans.  He has also answered our prayers, above and beyond what we could have expected.  We prayed before we came that God would enable us to go deeper with some of the children than we had opportunity last year.  I can't tell you how many children have opened up their hearts to us and told us part of their stories; particularly the adolescents.  Some truly amazing stories of heart break and pain inflicted by un-caring care givers, and just difficult family situations that have resulted in these children being placed in the care of an institution; a good institution for sure, but not a home.

We had prayed and hoped that we might this year have the opportunity to meet and talk with the young girls at the facility.  I don't know how, other than the magnificent and marvelous grace of God, but this year the young girls have opened up to all of us without reserve.  Yesterday, they spent time making friendship bracelets with the women on the team; it was a bonding experience.  Besides that, they designed some of their own patterns and stretched their own limits.  Today, the women on the team brought fingernail and toenail polish, of various colors and shades.  The young girls were so proud of their beautiful nails, and they sat around and talked girl-talk.  Quite amazing how our God can open hearts and provide opportunities.

It has all been exactly what we prayed for: (1) to go deeper with the children and to introduce them to the love of God in a greater way; and (2) to impact the young girls in a more definitive way.  All of that, plus completing some needed physical improvements, and some joyful, fun things to do at their home away-from-home.  Thank you God; we give you praise and honor, because you love us and you love these children.  Help us to move forward in ministry in your name.

Tomorrow, we have a celebration bar-b-que, at 5 pm.  We are looking forward to having a great meal with the children, and sharing some time with the facility administrators.  God, please continue to give us favor with all that we meet and greet in Your name.

How great is our God?

On Tuesday night, our team attended a special event at SoulCraft Church in Skopje, Macedonia. We heard George Verwer of Operation Mobilization speak and we worshiped alongside our brothers and sisters in Christ. One of the songs we sang was "How Great is Our God" and the lyrics have been reverberating in my head and heart ever since. This is the first Globalx trip for my wife, Jenn, and I. Although we'd heard all of the stories from our veteran team members from last year, we didn't really know what to expect when we showed up at the orphanage. Seeing their young faces light up moved our hearts in a big way. The psalmist asks God to "Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed." in Psalm 82:3 and we've seen evidence of God doing just that. These kids are having the time of their lives as we share God's love for them through sports, crafts, snacks, pictures and a pretty freak'n awesome zip line. I do have one prayer request. Please pray for Dennis. He's a sixteen-year-old orphan who is very bright and a great athlete. Steve and I had the opportunity to share the gospel with him yesterday and I believe God will use that conversation to work on his heart. His mom is a Muslim and he's been exposed to Christianity through foster homes he lived in before coming to the orphanage. He knows enough about both Christianity and Islam to realize that they can't both be true. We prayed for God to reveal Himself to him and he was thankful for our prayers. He expressed an interest in having his own Macedonian Bible so our friends here are delivering it to him tomorrow. We serve a great and mighty God and I wish I knew the words to express the awe I feel seeing him show up here in Macedonia with these orphans. May God bless you who are praying for us and may he continue to defend the cause of the weak and fatherless. Mark

A Sort of Homecoming...

With apologies to U2. Jeff used the word "reunion" to describe the great feelings we had on Day 1 and that continued today. I'm calling it a homecoming. Though it was only a week in 2011 it was amazing to see another world and especially the world of an orphan or a refugee or a runaway. Those are the kids we have met. What we see this year is a sort of second home. The kids knew we were coming and looked forward to it. They brought around the new kids, hugged us (including guy/handshake hugs) all in all they welcomed enthusiastically. The ladies were making the coffee drinkers coffee. We had lunch today prepared by the staff-a Macedonian honor. We know the staff now too. It was comfortable and familiar just like home. Our newest team members filled some very big shoes. They have been fabulous. They already are having those same feelings we did last year. It's a group of special kids who for at least a little while feel that way when we are there. For all the family and friends who supported us financially, spiritually and just by being our family and friends, thank you! You have given us a far bigger gift than we can give to these kids. At least though we feel at home and for a short time, I think they have a small sense of home. Finally, thanks Steve, Elizabeth, Theresa, Mark, Jennnifer, Jill, Mary, Nathan and especially Jeff; who said he was coming back and I should too, for being a wonderful force of God's grace! -Dan

I can only echo the sentiments of my sister Elizabeth.  When the Lord gives you favor, you have FAVOR indeed.  God gave Joseph favor with Potipher, and with the jailer, and with Pharoh.  One of our prayers before coming to Macedonia was that He would bestow His favor upon us, particularly with the children, but also with the orphanage administration and with the members of SoulCraft City church.  He did amazingly, above and beyond, what we could have expected.

First, He gave of favor with the children from the orphanage.  The young people that we met last year greeted us with open arms; genuine open arms and open hearts.  Last year a foundation of love was laid that maintained throughout the entire year; it was like we never left.  And because of their acceptance and love for us, all of the new children accepted us equally as well.  New friends were made that, by the grace of God, will grow and flourish into a flower that has eternal consequences for them and for us.

Second, God gave us favor with the orphanage administration.  Stepcha, the head administrator of the facility greeted us with an enthusiasm that I never expected.  Last year, before we began our activities in the gymnasium, we had a meeting with Stepcha; he was somewhat questioning, maybe even doubtful, about our motives and our capacity to accomplish the task at hand.   The team last year worked very hard, and I believe we demonstrated our love and commitment to the children and the work of improving the orphanage.  Because of that project last year, this year, as I stated earlier, Stepcha's greeting and enthusiasm was unabated and genuine.  He was very happy to see us and to participate in the installation of the playground equipment; he was hands on all day (except for the time he had to take out for the minor fire in the orphanage dormatory).  He told Nikola, the SoulCraft pastor, the "this was a day that the children would remember for the rest of their lives".

God also gave us favor with the work that was to be accomplished.  The team installed a Zipline between two trees; the distance was almost perfect for the 200 foot long unit that we purchased and brought with us.  The height on the first tree was about 16.5 feet and the height on the second tree was about 6 feet.  Needless to say, a good ride was had by all; no one dropped off and no one was injured (with the minor exception of Nathan's hand).  Today, we will build a ladder and platform to allow the little ones to ride.  We also purchased playground equipment which was delivered on Tuesday morning.  It was constructed of new wood and the contractor did a very good job.  We off-loaded the units and got them in place.  The contractor took over and completed the installation process.  Today, we will sand and paint the units; it should be a good day.

Finally, God gave us favor within the team.  Like the team from May 2011, God has knitted our hearts together; we worked like a well-oiled machine.  Like Elizabeth said, we laughed (belly laughs and laughing out loud) and we cried (mostly Elizabeth).  Not a cross word was spoken and we enjoyed each other's company all day.  The children eagerly accepted the new team members, and from the moment that we set foot on the grounds, we had favor with the children and love from them and for them.  Thank you God for this team and the work of preparation for the past six months, and the way that you have enabled us to begin this adventure with the children from the 25th of May orphanage.  We serve an awesome God that loves us and the people of Macedonia.

Father, we boldly pray today, again, for your favor in all that we do.
WHAT A DAY!!!!!! Today was the first day we went to the orphanage and it was, for me, and I'm guessing I am speaking for all of us, it was one of the best days I have had. The kids greeted us and received us and it ws off the hook. Many of the kids that were there last year were still there and they were so happy to see us as we were them. We all cried....ok, I CRIED. The guys on our team began the zip line installation and completed it. The kids, already went on it and it is SO STINKING COOL. Yes, I rode it too lol!!!!!!! Steve was the first one to give it a go!!!! Also, the playground was installed for beginnings, too. We will be working more on that on Wednesday. Our team is so pumped up and already folks like Nate and Mary are committed to returning. Jill made new friends with two of four brothers in the same family that were there. Of course those of us that went last year were wonderfully reunited with everyone, including the staff of the orphanage and the fabulous people from Soul Craft City church? All I can say is that there's this glow on my face and it won't wash off.......lol. God is so great, He made so many awesome things happen today that it would take me a week just to describe all that took place so that you could truly understand. Jac ya sakam Makedonia!!!! (I love Macedonia!) I wish all of you reading this would experience the love and grace of the Lord through these kids as we have today! I I know more pics will be downloaded soon. talk to y'all tomorrow ....God bless!

Oh my gosh! We are here! We are here! What a day of travel!!! God has gotten us here safe and we were greeted as family today by the famous NIKOLA and our faithful driver, Lupcha. Ain't nothing better! So glad to have our feet on Macedonia soil. We are exhausted and I think we are all going to crash in a minute...for as I write this it's almost 10pm. The weather is fantastic. Tomorrow we have a full day for our first day at the orphanage and can't wait to see the teens there again. Our hearts are open, our bodies will have rest and we'll be ready for service in the Name of Christ! All of our prayer and financial supporters will soon get pics! The Lord is awesome, He has done this, and it is marvelous is our eyes!!! More again tomorrow. See ya!!!! (hey Frankles!)
Thank God for His traveling mercies; we arrived right on time in Macedonia this afternoon about 4:00 pm local time and everyone's luggage was there and intact.  We were met by Nikola, the pastor of SoulCraft church, and Lupcha, our faithful driver.  It was a good trip overall, but a long day needless to say.  We had a casual afternoon of planning the weekly activities and then we had dinner at one of our favorite haunts here in Skopje.  We are all anxious to begin the work activities tomorrow morning with the playground contractor and those from SoulCraft who can attend.

I cannot say enough about this team that God has chosen to accomplish His work here in Skopje.  They have all extended grace and love toward one another; there has not been a cross word or a complaint, very similar to the team that served last year.  And there is enthusiasm in every heart to understand the work at hand and to blend their work of love with each other team member.

The reception we received here in Skopje was wonderful as usual; we are all looking forward to working together to do the project.  God bless for now and keep  you.  We could not be here without your love and support and prayers.  I believe Jeff or Dan may post some pictures from our journey today.

It is only 5 days away from going to Skopje, Macedonia. I am so honored and blessed by God to be able to "be with" the beautiful and wonderful (PREKRASNO) people of Macedonia!  Jac sum mnugo  streknya! ( I am very happy!)  Our team is totally pumped up and ready to see and be a part of what God has for us :)  I am so excited to be able to meet with the brothers and sisters again at Soul Craft City Church.  They mean so much to me and to us.  Its family.  I am wondering how the students at the "25th of May" orphanage will react to our coming back....as we promised.  I love those kids so much.  No words.  I am also pleased to call our team family.  The likes of Stevo, Dan, Jeff, Teresa, Mark, Jenn, baby Fisher, Mary, Nathan, Jill, and myself- all being united as one in Christ- is a bit of the Kingdom of God right here on Earth. Good God, great people, let's rock!  Stay tuned....results of the infamous ZIP LINE project/adventure for the orphanage will be revealed later next week, Lord willing and the creek don't rise.  Hey you people who are praying and have supported us....you are fabulous and this is your mission, too.  With you we are going...much love and God's favor :) Blagodaram za se!!  (Thank you for everything!)
